Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Early Mickey "rap" version of "Fire"

Where can I find this? I know it exists as I heard it once many moons ago on a bootleg tape.

Blair Jackson mentions it in his "Garcia" biography: Mickey actually wrote "Fire on the Mountain" w/Hunter years before the Dead started playing it live and the lyrics were done in a wicked cool spoken-word rap by Mickey against a drum beat/percussion background.

Any idea where this might exist for actual listening or more? outtakes perhaps or something? I seem to remember in being early 70's or even late '69?

G. Sorry I can't help with a definitive answer and you've probably seen this from Grateful Dead Lyric & Song Finder but thought I'd post it anyway:
'Mickey Hart recorded this as a rap-type studio version ages ago, and now performs a similar version with Mystery Box and The Other Ones (full lyrics). These include yet another verse: ' etc etc

I don't recall any of the dates but I saw him do it several times in 97-98 with the other ones or "The Dead" whatever they were goin by at the time. I know for sure one of the shows was Montage Mountain I believe it was 98'.

Damn, this question sent me on a search of my hard drives. I couldn't figure out where it was, because I couldn't remember the year. Anyways, I had it filed under Mickey Hart.

It's a file set titled Mickey Hart and the Marin County Collective. It's dated 72-73 and doesn't give an exact date. It's a compilation of 2 different "sessions." One is titled Area Code 451 sessions and the other is titled Fire on the mountain sessions. I just listened to the Fire on the Mountain & it is definitely what you're looking for. I'm not sure where I obtained it, but I believe it was from one of the bit torrent sites. I can reseed it there if you like or I can send you a copy.

There are quite a few musicians on the different tracks: Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Steven Schuster, Barry Melton, John Cippolina, David Frieberg, Robert Hunter, Kate McDonald and Jim McPherson all sit in at one time or another.

Let me know if I can help you obtain this.

You're in luck, because this week's program has the FotM that you seek. You can fast forward to the end once you get the program running.

I had it as some filler on a cassette back in the 80s. No way to trust this info but I believe it was labeled "Mickey's barn '74". Again, I have no idea how accurate that was.

I have not seen a copy available online during the digital age, but I haven't really looked, either.
